Obituary of James S. "Jim" Armstrong

James S. “Jim” Armstrong, 68, of Downsville passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at UHS Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton surrounded by his loving family following a long illness. Born October 15, 1953 in Downsville, he was the son of Doris Babcock and the late Sherman Armstrong. Jim worked as the Head Mechanic for the Downsville Central School District for over 25 years. He loved serving his community and showed that by serving with the Downsville Fire Department as an Interior Firefighter for 45 years and Fire Commissioner for 40 years. He also owned and operated Armstrong’s Service Station in Downsville for many years. The business is now run by his son James and continues to provide quality automotive service for the Downsville community. Jim was always known to be the first person to every community breakfast in Downsville. He was a devoted family man and had a special place in his heart for his grandson Archer. When Jim wasn’t busy serving his community or spending time with his family, he enjoyed working on antique cars, building things with his hands to include an addition to his family home and was an avid animal lover. Survivors include his beloved wife of 41 years, Dawn Stanton Armstrong; children Kristina Armstrong and James G. Armstrong (Jaclyn); grandson Archer Armstrong; cousin Vaughn Vernold (Nancy) and their family and longtime friend and co-worker Dot Bradtke. A service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at 11 A.M. at Colchester Community United Methodist Church, 15229 Main Street, Downsville with Pastor Chistine Lindeberg officiating. All patrons attending the services for Jim are asked to wear a mask in church. Jim will be laid to rest at Paige Cemetery in Downsville at a later date. Memorial donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Downsville Fire Department, 15166 State Highway 30, Downsville, NY 13755.
