Gordon L. Oliver, 83, of Sidney Center, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 11, 2021 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness. Born on July 18, 1938, in Roxbury, NY, he was a son to the late Howard and Grace (Burgher) Oliver. On July 20, 1958 he married Shirley Hope (Bullis) Oliver in Oneonta. When Gordon was 18-21 years old, he enlisted in the Army National Guard. He began employment at Lynn Coach – Med where he assembled ambulances. Gordon then went on to work for the West Nesbitt Feed Store. In 1966, he moved to Sidney Center where he worked at Unalam as a welder. After 35 years of employment there, he retired in September of 2001. He had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, and antique automobiles. He even owned a 1949 Ford. Above all, his greatest passion was spending time with his family. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren little ditties. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Shirley Hope Bullis Oliver; two brothers, Robert Oliver of Sidney, NY and Howard Oliver of Oneonta, NY (Polly); his children, Dale Oliver (Rhonda) of Mount Upton, Brian Oliver of Oneonta, Lavonne Barnes (Don) of Walton, Christine Light of Unadilla and Cynthia Bartow (Keith) of Treadwell; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by four sisters, Mary Ruline (Ken), Beverly Davenport (Billy), Helen Barlow and Ruthann Allen. Per Gordon’s wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral services. A celebration of Gordon's life will be held on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at 12 P.M. at his home.
