Obituary of Loretta C. Smith

Loretta C. Smith was born December 18, 1940 in New Jersey to her parents Vito & Clementina DeVido who immigrated to the USA from Italy through Ellis Island. Loretta grew up in New Jersey with her brother Robert and Sister Judith. After high school, she graduated from Montclair State College in NJ majoring in physical education. She then embarked on missionary work in El Salvador where she met Richard Smith. She married Richard Smith in 1966 in NJ. Over the next 5 years she had four boys. In 1976 the family moved to Walton, NY where she has since resided. Loretta worked in the family business and home before landing a job at the former Countryside Care Center in Delhi. She was proud of her time spent working there. She enjoyed her work and her co-workers. In 1986 she had another son. Loretta was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church who never wavered in her faith. She attended church in Walton & Downsville routinely up until her passing. Loretta was a tough lady who survived a cheating husband, a divorce, heart attack and stroke. Most recently she recovered from a broken hip. She also survived raising five boys. She enjoyed her home in Walton, gardening, grand kids and her friends. She liked to travel, especially to the Jersey Shore. Her favorite thing to do was to travel someplace with no one really knowing where she went. Despite all her poorly laid plans, she always managed to get back home. Her biggest trip was flying to Italy to see her relatives there. She sent a letter a couple weeks before she left, letting them know she was coming. She flew to Italy and to her surprise no one was there to pick her up. She managed to track down her parents' family and explain in English to Italians who she was & why she came. She stayed three weeks and returned home. Her letter finally showed up in Italy about a week after she had left. Unfortunately, her last surprise trip to Germany was foiled by her fall and broken hip. Her stubborn "I can do it" attitude was legendary. She also traveled to Canada where she got to stand on a glacier and last year went on a cruise around Hawaii. Loretta also loved flower and vegetable gardening and bird feeding and watching. Loretta is survived by five children: Timothy J. Smith {Bonnie Owens} of PA, Matthew M. Smith {Christy} of MT, Nathan R. Smith {Heather} of NY, Atticus C. Smith {Vanessa} of NM and Joshua T. Smith of MT. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, two great grand-children and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her Brother Robert DeVido, Sister Judith DeVido and parents Vito & Clementina DeVido. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at 11 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 25 Benton Avenue, Walton with the Rev. Edward J. Golding officiating. Loretta will be laid to rest in the spring at a day and time to be announced. Arrangements have been entrusted to Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
