Obituary of John F. Kane

John F. “Jack” Kane, a longtime resident of Walton, New York, died on July 3, 2019. He was 77.

Jack was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 22, 1942 to Raymond and Margaret (Hickey) Kane. He graduated from Chaminade High School in 1959 and earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College in 1963. After graduation, he built roads for the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City. Jack then joined the United States Navy in 1964 and led a unit of the Seabees, serving three tours in Vietnam.

Upon returning to the U.S. in 1969, Jack’s best friend Kevin Cloonan introduced Jack to Alice Nollet, who was the best friend of Kevin’s wife Kaye.  Jack and Alice were married six months later in Acton, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1969.

After leaving the Navy, he worked for Turner Construction in New York City and Minneapolis, where his projects included the construction of the IDS Center. Jack and Alice moved to Walton in November 1971, when he joined New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection, overseeing the Pepacton and Cannonsville reservoirs which supply the city’s drinking water, until his retirement in January 2005. They raised three children and Jack was an active member of the community. He was a troop leader for the Boy Scouts, a member of the St. John the Baptist parish council and a member of the local Lions Club for four decades.

After his retirement from the DEP, Jack consulted frequently on engineering projects locally and nationally. He served with the Federal Emergency Management Association in the wake of a number of natural disasters, including hurricanes in Texas and floods in Nebraska. Closer to home, he worked on the restoration of the historic Walton Theatre after the 2006 floods.

He is survived by his wife Alice, brothers Patrick Kane and Raymond Kane, daughters Catherine Kane and Jennifer Kelly, son James Kane, daughter-in-law Amanda (Morgan) Kane, son-in-law Jason Kelly, grandsons William Kelly, Henry Kelly, Liam Kane and Finnley Kane and granddaughter Alice Kelly.
